Before 1870, this area was part of the Nieuweroord Park. After the construction of the Main Building I of the Dutch Railways, a small park emerged in front of the building. The avenue south of it was called Moreelselaan.

Mariaplaats is a square in the Dutch city of Utrecht, named after the vanished Maria Church. Around it was a large square, of which the parts to the north and east of the former church still exist, together forming current-day Mariaplaats.

The Dom Tower, standing at 112.32 meters, is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and the tallest building in Utrecht.
